Challenge & Research Goals
OurRitual, aimed to improve the usability and clarity of their registration form, focusing specifically on the Health & Safety Declaration section, which is particularly relevant given that the company deals with relationship support.
Their primary goal was to ensure users would read and comprehend the declaration before checking two relevant boxes about their current situation.
This was a significant challenge, as it is not easy to ensure people read critical pages instead of skipping through them.
Solution
To achieve that they decided to conduct a remote, unmoderated test using UXtweak. Participants were asked to interact with a Figma prototype of the registration form and complete the sign-up process.
Santina Piazzese Spratte, senior UX researcher at OurRitual, explains that key aspects of the study included:
- Participants: 20 individuals aged 25–45 from the U.S., evenly split by gender, recruited, and smoothly redirected to UXtweak.
- Tasks: OurRitual used UXtweak’s task creation tool to craft instructions in an easy and engaging way. Participants were asked to register for the platform while paying attention to specific elements of the form, including the Health & Safety Declaration and checkboxes.
- Feedback: Post-task questionnaires were crucial for the study, as they allowed the team to explore participants’ understanding of these elements, with scenarios designed to assess how users interpreted and responded to the checkboxes.
The question bank tool in UXtweak allowed us to craft clear, engaging follow-ups that uncovered some insights that would’ve been hard to frame on our own.
This streamlined the process for both participants and our team working on the test design.
This approach leveraged UXtweak tools for both behavioral analysis (e.g., session recordings) and direct feedback, enabling a comprehensive understanding of user interactions and perceptions.
Outcome
After analyzing the results, OurRitual identified key areas where users were experiencing confusion and frustration. Insights from session recordings and data visualization informed significant updates to the form’s navigation and layout. These changes resulted in a more intuitive experience.
The session recordings gave us the ‘aha moment’ we needed. Watching how users struggled with the hidden scrollable section, and how some others zoomed past the declaration without a second look, made it clear where we needed to make improvements.
Testing uncovered some critical issues about the design:
- Usability
The findings showed that 80% of participants initially missed the scrollable section that was necessary to unlock the checkboxes, discovering it only after encountering issues with the form submission.
- Understanding of the Declaration
45% of users correctly identified the Health & Safety Declaration’s focus. However, the wide variety of alternative interpretations highlighted a need for clearer language.
- Checkbox clarity
Responses to scenarios revealed inconsistencies, particularly in ambiguous situations. While users understood clear cases, scenarios involving nuanced behavior produced varied answers.
These findings informed design updates that improved both usability and alignment with the platform’s goals.
